A Stakeholder meeting with Kavaklıderem Association | Ankara

31. 7. 26 11:30

During the meeting, representatives of the association shared their experiences with community-based environmental activities, particularly a balcony gardening initiative that had been actively implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic. The discussion also highlighted the potential for introducing rainwater harvesting systems in residential buildings, offering opportunities to improve local water management and encourage more sustainable practices at the neighbourhood level. A major concern raised during the meeting was the impact of ongoing urban redevelopment on green spaces and biodiversity. As older buildings are replaced by new developments, many residential backyards are disappearing, disrupting the interconnected green corridor traditionally formed by these gardens. This gradual fragmentation of urban greenery threatens local biodiversity, reduces habitat connectivity, and weakens the ecological functions of the neighbourhood.

To further explore these challenges and opportunities, a technical field visit was organised on 3 August 2026. During the visit, potential locations for small-scale nature-based solutions were observed, and discussions were held with local residents to better understand neighbourhood conditions and community perspectives. Particular attention was given to the remaining backyard green spaces, opportunities for rainwater harvesting, and ways to protect and strengthen ecological connections within the urban landscape. The meeting and field visit highlighted the importance of collaboration with neighbourhood associations and local communities in identifying practical, place-based climate adaptation solutions. Through its engagement with Kavaklıderem Association, the Co-ADAPT Project aims to support community-driven approaches that help preserve urban biodiversity, improve rainwater management, and promote greener, more resilient neighbourhoods in Ankara.

On 31 July 2026, a meeting was held with Kavaklıderem Association, a local neighbourhood association in Ankara, as part of the project. The meeting provided an opportunity to introduce the project's objectives and activities, learn about the association's local environmental initiatives, and explore potential opportunities for implementing small-scale NbS in the Kavaklıdere neighbourhood.
